news. we talked every day this week since the tragedy of sandy hook elementary school last friday, talking every day this week about the need to do something about gun control. and not just after sandy hook but sandy hook seems to be the tipping point after so many of the other mass cars because you saw these 6-year-old kids, angels taken away. let's talk about that. yesterday, expressing a little frustration over president obama not being very specific, yesterday, later in the day, we got some good news on several fronts in this effort to respond to the gun violence in this country in an intelligent and across-the across-the-board way. let me tell you about a couple of things that happened. maybe you don't know. one of the big prior to equity firms, serberus said they were going to drop sell, get rid of the freedom group. the freedom group includes bushmaster, incorporated, whatever it is, the people who make the bushmast ter assault rifle. they got a call from the california teachers association which has a huge huge pension program, and they tol

went into sandy hook elementary. he shot his way in, which was confirmed by authorities yesterday. the principal and school psychologist were in a meeting. when they heard the shots, they rushed to the front door and that is when they were shot down. there were two first grade classrooms. adam lanzas went in. the teacher, hearing the shot, got the children into a bathroom and hid them there. the teacher hid the children inside and 14 children there who were huddled all of them were killed as well as the teacher. going into the next classroom, we are told that the students were all in a closet and that he confronted the teacher there, victoria soto, who was one of the victims and trying to divert him, she said, they are down the hall. they are in another place. six of those children tried to escape hearing that conversation and all of them were killed as well. it is a horrifying scene. the details of which are starting to emerge. those things in this community that is already so heart broken. again, the president coming here tonight to try to help to heal some of those wounds that
couples that brought this case ultimately, chris and sandy, and paul and jeff, simply wanted the right to be able to marry the person that they love, and for their families to have the same recognition as their neighbors, and that's why this case is so simple. i do believe it was the right time, and i am confident, i am optimistic that once the court hears this case and sees the evidence that was preblted at trial, that as they have so many times in our nation's past, will come down on the side of freedom and equality. >> it's clearly where the american people are in terms of all the polling. the country has moved on. it's accepted. gay marriage is -- >> no question. >> same-sex marriage is simply an accepted fact of life, and so many families across the country. yet, the risk is that this could become illegal. what happens to all of these couples? what happens to their rights? >> look. at the end of the day, again, i'm optimistic we'll win this case. as we did in the lower court and by a judge who was first appointed by ronald reagan and then later by george bush. and then won at the

has proclaimed tomorrow a day of mourning for the victims of the sandy hook elementary school shooting. gun violence is not a suburban issue or an urban issue. it's an american issue. here, in chicago, gun violence is an epidemic. take a look at this map of the city. the yellow dots mark all of the shootings that have taken place in chicago this year alone. the red dots represent people killed by gun violence in 2012. all toll, 465 people have been killed in chicago this year. including 62 school-aged children. all of these murders and mass killings are tragedies. we've had almost segregated response. every child's life should have equal value. yet, too many people have been silent about the murders in places like chicago. the gun debate has been raging for a long time chlts but none of us have done enough. yesterday, the president was asked this question. >> this is not the first issue of horrific gun violence of your four years. where have you been? >> where has he been? where has the congress been? where has everybody been? gun violence wasn't part of the national debate in the pres
